Grammar note
Separable verbs split, then rejoin
Ausgehen splits in the present (ich gehe aus) but rejoins in the participle, with ge- inserted in the middle: ausgegangen. Same for einkaufen → eingekauft, aufstehen → aufgestanden.
So the prefix that flew to the end of the sentence in the present comes home in the Perfekt — and the whole participle lands at the end anyway.
Grammar note
war and hatte — the exception to Perfekt
Even in speech, sein and haben normally use the simple past: es **war** schön (not es ist schön gewesen), ich **hatte** keine Zeit.
Modal verbs behave the same way: ich musste arbeiten, ich wollte kommen. For everything else, the Perfekt is the spoken default.
