Spanish greetings change with the time of day and with who you are talking to. The time-of-day part is easy. The who part is the one that catches English speakers out, because English stopped making the distinction four hundred years ago and Spanish never did.
Notice that Spanish has no equivalent of the English "good afternoon/evening" split at 5pm - buenas tardes runs until it gets dark, around sunset or 7-8pm in Mexico.
