Spanish A1: Foundations

Numbers 0-20

Numbers show up everywhere: prices, phone numbers, addresses, ages, and times. The first twenty are worth memorising properly, because everything above them is built from these pieces.

Grammar note

Uno becomes un

Uno shortens to un before a masculine noun: un café, un euro. Before a feminine noun it becomes una: una cerveza, una mesa.

This only affects the number one. Dos, tres, and the rest never change form.

Cultural note

Counting on your fingers

In Spain and most of Latin America, counting on fingers starts with the thumb rather than the index finger. Holding up an index finger for "one" is understood, but it can read as slightly foreign.
